It turned May with cooler-than-normal weather and plenty of rain to wash the pollen out of the air. May is also getting exponentially busy for me as I wrap up school, pack up again, and start two new jobs. The logistics are daunting, but the breaths of change, freedom, and possibilities are wonderful birthday presents.
Jon and Luna (his dog) hiked into town last week, and I was delighted that they could share my birthday weekend with me.
On Saturday, Matt, Jon, Uwharrie, Luna, and I ran/hiked up from Big East Fork towards Shining Rock to harvest ramps. Matt and Jon turned a bunch into ramp hummus, and we brought two huge tubs to share with everyone on Sunday's paddle.
We canoed a stretch of the French Broad between Rosman (where I work) and Brevard (where I live). It is supposed to be an easy, lazy paddle, but the river was swollen from spring rains and moving at a pretty fast clip. Add to that a number of blowdowns to maneuver through and nervous dogs in the canoes, and yes, we tipped into that cold water. After that, I think Matt and I were too nervous to pull out a camera, so we have photos only from shore. Tipping and all, I had a perfect day. Thank you all for coming!
Friends are great -- aren't they, Uwharrie?
