I've been hanging a lot of laundry inside the house for the last few weeks because there's been so many rainy - or about to rain - days. Our space heaters seem to keep us warm enough, so the loud monitor heater remains on stand-by. We can even keep the windows cracked open, too. Finally, a gorgeous weekend. I finished cleaning house and chopping vegetables early and had enough time to go for a short run in shorts and T-shirt. I was happy, the way we get in the spring. I even swung a little on the playground. The bulbs are coming up all over the neighborhood.
Happy Chinese New Year! Once again, friends came over to make dumplings and help bring in the Year of the Dragon. (The size of this celebration grows as I meet more people in Marion.) They brought over some yummy Asheville brews, homemade wines, and delicious pimento cheese. Vanessa's idea was to make fortune cookies with fortunes that we would write to each other. "Stop drinking," one advised to a shocked recipient. "You will feed leftovers to the dog," another one foretold.
To find winter and snow, Matt and I started from Curtis Creek and headed up Heartbreak Ridge for Mitchell over MLK weekend. On our second night out, we camped on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, in the shelter of rhododendron, but with a view of the reservoir. It snowed four inches overnight, transforming the morning into a winter wonderland.
