Day 9: 388 miles

Waynesboro, VA is still a very welcoming trail town. We had a nice downhill off of Skyline Drive to the outfitters for necessary bike supplies/repair. (The buildings at Rockfish Gap are even more falling apart than in 2007.) Matt and I were debating whether to continue or stay when we found out that there was not only a bluegrass festival but also a hiker fest, and that sealed the deal. We're camped along the river and showered at the YMCA like last time.

The 105 miles through the Shenandoahs were a treat. Little traffic, courteous drivers, shaded road, lush green forests, quiet, and waysides for meals. We would just let our bikes go on the downhills, and the thrill made the granny gear ups all worth it. That's what makes me happy on a bike. The drivers would not pass us on the downhills, which make me comfortable to ride in the middle of the road (and safer, too).

In the evening, we would pop down to an AT shelter for the night.

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
