Day 12: 512 miles

Nervous downhill in the heavy fog and light rain. Now drying off in Vinton, VA. I've got to give it to the '09 thru-hikers because it is a very wet year. The Parkway has now split from the AT, so the rest of our trip is new territory.

I think Matt and I both feel acclimated to bike touring by now. Even with a 13-mile climb from the James River up to Apple Orchard (lowest point on Parkway to highest point on Parkway in VA), we both felt it wasn't a hard day.

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
