Since the Freedom Industries spill came to light, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) has emphasized that it was "a chemical company incident" and "not a coal company incident." But the disaster shows how dirty and dangerous coal is throughout its entire lifecycle, including its processing.

In its first reporting of this story, NPR mentioned that the water disaster was related to processing coal. By the next day and thereafter, it was merely a "chemical spill". What spin to protect the coal industry! For more information, read this article from the Institute for Southern Studies.
