September shift

It's quiet at Castle Lake in September and shifting ever so slightly into fall. The crew is only there on weekends this month, so I notice these things. While late August and early September were windy, there are now periods of incredible calm, and the lake is glass. When I canoed around to set bug traps, I could see the bottom of the lake the entire way.

I spend most of the week in Reno, working in the UNR Aquatic Ecosystems Analysis Laboratory. It took me a couple hours to get my bearings in the two buildings and to learn the ins and outs of lab vehicles, key codes, P-cards, freezer space, and even how to turn on the DI water. Most of the time, I prep and run chlorophyll samples, but I sometimes help with other projects of the lab, too. I stay with Alecia in the midtown area of Reno and have discovered excellent ethnic bakeries.

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
