wrapping up the school year, ringing in the summer

Our staff planning retreat this year was in Pigeon Forge -- not the atmosphere I would have chosen, but I enjoyed myself and appreciate the efforts my principal makes for her staff. In this respect, she is the best boss.

We joked that one word best described this trip: Full. Between zipping, horseback riding (plodding), eating, dinner shows, magic shows, planning, more eating, outlet mall shopping, there was a hiatus. Encouraged by Vanessa and Matt, Jessica led a group of us into the Smokies one night to see the synchronous fireflies. It felt like a dream: You're in some pitch black void for seven seconds, but then the ground and woods light up in slowly drifting dots, then pitch black again. They call you silently to follow, a dream or a scene from a Miyazaki's film.

There was another hiatus: Our coworkers hanging out in our room, showing off some skanking as Matt played ska music from his laptop. I have a video somewhere....

We arrived home with just enough time for me to pack and run errands around town before Brandon showed up. I'd pieced together a little trip which will leave Matt our car:

Thurs May 24: catch ride with Brandon to Maiden
Fri May 25: catch ride with Brandon to Greensboro where Mommy picks me up
May 25 - 29: hang out in Cary, help Mommy around house, maybe meet up with Caity
May 30: take train from Cary to DC, rally to save Nick's Organic Farm, stay with Liz
May 31: take evening commuter rail to Martinsburg, WV where Jess picks me up
Jun 1 - 3: hang out with Jess
Jun 4: take morning commuter rail back to DC, take train home, Matt arrives in Cary
Jun 5: leave for Outer Banks
Jun 5 - 9: enjoy beach time
Jun 9: drive west to High Point
Jun 10: drive home to Marion

A little change of plans: Brandon took me down to Davidson to stay with Hannah, since there'd be more to do. Before I knew it, I was on a boat zipping across Lake Norman. It was Hannah's brother, Tom, and roommate, Justin who were hosting us. I love little adventures, seeing where the day takes me -- a luxury I don't have during the more rigid school year. But summer!

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
