a break

Sorry I haven't been updating the blog all these months. For the first time since we became a 1:1 school (every students has a MacBook), I am truly integrating technology into my class. We are also using it to organize and communicate among the staff members. It's ramped up the quality of teaching, but I stare at a computer screen ALL day. I've been log-in-log-off to check my email, and blogging seemed like another thing to weaken my eyes.

I also started to feel that disconnect that comes with our access to technology: Here I was sending typed thoughts onto the internet, and I didn't know if anybody was receiving them. Yes, any number of nameless people could have read my blog, but who are you? What is your name? What did you think? (Or did you just scan?) I missed the conversation. Interestingly enough, what drives me back to this blog is an increasing sense of isolation. Maybe the one-way blogging is better than not reaching out.

I'm feeling a little low today, but spring is full force out there, and our front yard maple has leafed out nicely. Matt, Uwharrie, and I took a road trip down to Florida to visit his grandparents. I really had a good time: To be moving, seeing new things, and sharing it.

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
