ignorance and fear

Four students started walking on Jan. 1, 2010 from Miami to Washington, D.C to share their stories of being young, immigrant, and undocumented and to call for a much-needed change in our immigration policies. They call their walk the Trail of Dreams. One of the boys, Juan, writes with anger and a little sarcasm on their blog:

Today we drove to Nahunta, GA where the Ku Klux Klan was organizing an anti-immigrant demostration, under the premise that “God put each race in their respective continent and they were meant to stay there. “ I can’t help but keep being amused by these concepts that the very organization can’t seem to be able to uphold appropriately. Is the KKK secretly on a campaign to reclaim all lands back for the indigenous people of North America and preparing for the voyage back to Europe? I find this highly unlikely.

Sometimes I am amazed that our country holds so true to her free speech principles to let the KKK continue to exist. Last week, I dealt with a respect issue that started with a couple of guys making fun of a girl who said in effect, "I heard that the KKK was started by a black person." Now this particular girl is a straight A student, head of student government, mature, responsible, active in church, from a respected family, candidate for scholarships... and she was dead serious when she made that comment. How could we have let her get so far in school, in church, and not taught her beyond a shadow of doubt that a white supremacist organization was - how should I say it - bad!?!

There were children dressed in pointed white robes....

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
