april showers

Happy birthday, Grant!

The Earth Shelter is built into the hillside, near the gate to The Mountain Institute's property. Its out-facing wall is all windows, from floor to ceiling, and the view is incredible and unspoiled. Here's the only internet access. The rest of campus (yurts, kitchen, dorms, showers) are a mile up the grassy hill. I'm looking at the 6'x8' geologic map of West Virginia that's hanging on a side wall, and looking forward to the walk back.

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
