1185 miles

Wow, is it muggy out this morning! I thought I'd check out the Bears Den Hostel to break up my long day of puds (pointless ups and downs) coming up. Now, I wish I'd gotten here last night! It's a very comfortable and welcoming place. Lodging opportunities seem to get more luxurious as I head south: Maine shelters are plain lean-tos (usually older), but now the shelters have lofts and decks and porch swings and balconies! Maine still has the privies with more character, though. ;-)

"No emotion, or none but the deepest, the most unguessed-at: a ground bass of contentedness, like the hum of traffic that lulls the city-dweller to sleep, or like the silence of the night to countryfolk."
-- J.M. Coetzee, Disgrace

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
