another exchange that amused me today

I've begun to hear talk about Prom. It's that time of year, I suppose.

I was minding my own business, taking roll or something, slightly eavesdropping on their conversation about dresses and colors, when one of my girls pops the question, "Ms. Chang, are you going to Prom?"

They ask this question so casually, like I am just another classmate. It's not "Are you chaperoning Prom?" or even "Will you be at Prom?" but "Are you going to Prom?". There's a level of expectation with the question that includes (but is not limited to) dressing up, finding a date, and renting a limo. This comes from not looking old enough to be teaching seniors....

"Oh, I'm not sure. Do I have to be there?"

"You don't HAVE to, but some teachers come."

When I didn't answer right away, another student piped up, "Come on, Ms. Chang, it'll be fun! We'll get your hair done, and nails...."

Lol, say no more! She obviously didn't know me well enough to know that was the way to turn me OFF to the idea....

Although, I can't really talk because I went through the whole Prom thing myself in high school - and with all the fixings, too - and really enjoyed myself. I'll never forget -- how many bobby-pins I pulled out of my hair. And that I wore a pink dress! :-D

Ecology studies the interrelationship between organisms and their environment. It originates from the German word okologie, first used in 1873.

This blog documents one organism's interactions with her environment.
What would be the hope of being personally whole in a dismembered society, or personally healthy in a landscape scalped, scraped, eroded, and poisoned, or personally free in a land entirely controlled by the government [or corporations], or personally enlightened in an age illuminated only by TV? - Wendell Berry
